The Classical Pilates Centre teacher training program equips aspiring teachers with the standard repertoire of Pilates exercises but emphasises critical thought in determining the appropriateness of each exercise for the client. The course was developed by Kirk James Smith, a second-generation Pilates teacher, who has 23 years of experience teaching the method. 

Kirk began his Pilates teaching education in New York under Joseph Pilates’ most influential student, Romana Kryzanowska in 1999. Kirk has also benefited from significant influence from first-generation teacher Jay Grimes, and has had lessons with the incomparable Mary Bowen. 

Kirk Smith is the Course Director and oversees every course we teach. Our standards are high and we pride ourselves on producing teachers that are well-equipped and confident in their skills.

Why are we different?

The Classical Pilates Centre teacher training program follows a traditional approach to the education of teachers. Nowadays most training providers teach stand-alone courses for individual pieces of equipment. We, on the other hand, continue the tradition of teaching Pilates as a system. Why does this matter? If for example, the body lesson of an exercise on one piece of equipment is too challenging for the client, we can select the most appropriate piece of equipment to convey the same message. The body still needs the message, but the right piece of equipment at the right time helps us select the appropriate increment of challenge. 

We will teach you the classical repertoire, help you develop the eye for what each client needs and the hands-on skills for teaching Pilates intelligently and clearly.
